10_23 Europe/Africa Broadcast (INTERGEO, African Health Coverage and More)

Hello, and welcome to GeoSpatial Stream. I’m your host, Todd Danielson, and today’s Lead Sponsor is Trimble Geospatial Division.

Today’s Top Story is Europe and Africa. GeoSpatial Stream has a monthly episode covering the Asia-Pacific region, but I’ve come across a lot of news lately from these other two areas, so I thought I’d broaden our geographic representation. And don’t worry, I won’t mention Ebola. If you’d like non-stop coverage on that topic, check out any cable news network at any time of the day …

A main source of European geospatial news comes from the recently held INTERGEO conference in Berlin. They did some really nice video work at the event, so we’ll start with a clip, and I’ll cover some news from the conference later on:

That was today’s Top Story. I’ll be back with more news after this brief message.

The One Million Community Health Workers Campaign, commissioned by the Earth Institute, used mapping technology to help achieve systematic Human Resources for Health coverage of the low-income, rural sub-Saharan African population of 500 million by 2015. The map was designed to be a constantly evolving tool, regularly updated with information submitted by organizations deploying community health workers across sub-Saharan Africa. The map is refreshed every month as new data become available.

The European Commission and Europe’s data industry committed to invest 2.5 billion Euros in a public-private partnership to strengthen the region’s data sector, hoping to create 100,000 new data-related jobs in Europe by 2020.

In industry headlines, GfK released its Europe Map Edition 2014/2015 of administrative and postal regions for geomarketing analyses. Approximately one thousand digital maps have been updated to reflect the latest status.

Euroconsult published a report, Satellite-Based Earth Observation: Market Prospects to 2023, noting that 353 Earth-observation satellites are expected to be launched over the next decade, compared to 162 over 2004-2013. This will result in $36 billion in manufacturing revenues over the period, an 85% increase over the previous decade.

Airbus Defence and Space and Spectrum Geo produced a joint study correlating natural oil seeps identified from radar and optical satellites with 2-D seismic data to assist hydrocarbon exploration in the Adriatic Sea.

And Headwall Photonics delivered two hyperspectral imaging sensors to Columbia University as part of its Air-Sea-Ice Physics and Biogeochemistry Experiment, which is part of a larger international collaborative investigation of Climate Cryosphere Interaction with colleagues from Spain, Germany and Norway.

For today’s Final Thought, here’s a cool video created by European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst orbiting Earth on the International Space Station:
